Dad who won battle to give baby ‘banned name’ responds to registrar’s threat that ‘nobody would ever hire him’

Dan and Mandy Sheldon thought choosing a unique name for their newborn son would be a joyful and personal decision. Instead, the UK couple found themselves at the center of a heated debate after deciding to name their baby boy Lucifer. What should have been a simple trip to register their child reportedly became an uncomfortable confrontation when the registrar strongly objected to the name because of its religious associations. According to Dan, the official warned that their son “wouldn’t succeed in life” and claimed teachers might not want to teach him. The couple tried to explain that they were not religious and understood the name differently, pointing out that Lucifer originally means “light-bringer” or “morning star” in Greek and Latin traditions. However, the registrar allegedly refused to listen and even suggested they choose another legal name while using Lucifer privately at home. The Sheldons were shocked by the reaction, especially after being told the name was banned in countries like New Zealand. Feeling judged rather than advised, they filed a complaint and insisted on keeping the name they loved for their child.

After a tense process, the name Lucifer was eventually approved and officially registered, though Dan described the experience as unpleasant from beginning to end. He said officials even asked the couple to leave the room while discussing whether the name could legally be accepted, leaving them stunned by the treatment they received. Despite the criticism, Dan and Mandy stood firm, explaining that they simply wanted a distinctive and meaningful name for their son. Derbyshire County Council later apologized if the parents felt offended, while also defending the registrar’s responsibility to inform families about possible cultural or social associations linked to certain names. Since the story became public, it has sparked major online debate, with many people divided over whether parents should have complete freedom when naming their children or whether certain names may unfairly burden a child later in life. While some believe Lucifer carries too much negative symbolism because of its connection to Satan in modern Christianity, others argue that personal choice should come first. For Dan and Mandy, however, the decision remains final and deeply personal.
