Now, the DNA of Spanish-American supercentenarian Maria Branyas Morera is offering scientists rare insight into what may support extreme longevity. Born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907, Morera lived through more than a century of global change before passing away in 2024 at the age of 117. Her life spanned two world wars, the rise of modern medicine, and the tenure of 21 U.S. presidents, yet she remained notably healthy for much of her later years. After relocating to Catalonia in 1915, she lived there for the rest of her life, eventually becoming the world’s oldest verified living person. Before her death, she made a remarkable request: that researchers study her DNA to better understand why she lived so long, with the hope that her biology might help others extend their own healthy lifespans.

That request led scientists from institutions including the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute to analyze her genetic and cellular makeup. Their findings revealed striking biological advantages: her body appeared 10 to 15 years younger than her chronological age, with unusually favorable cholesterol levels, low inflammation markers, and genetic traits linked to slower aging. Researchers also examined her telomeres—chromosome end caps associated with aging—and suggested that in her case, shorter telomeres may have even offered protection against cancer. Combined with her lifestyle, including regular movement, a strong social life, no smoking or alcohol, and a daily habit of probiotic yogurt, the results painted a broader picture of longevity. Scientists concluded that her extreme age was likely the product of both inherited genetics and lifelong habits, reinforcing the idea that aging and poor health do not have to be directly connected.
