Bladder cancer is often mistaken for UTIs – 9 subtle symptoms you should never ignore

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are extremely common, especially among women, and many people recognize the familiar symptoms: burning while urinating, frequent urges to go, discomfort, and sometimes blood in the urine. However, experts warn that symptoms that seem like a UTI may occasionally point to something more serious, including bladder cancer. Research has shown that many women diagnosed with bladder cancer were first treated for a suspected UTI. Consultant urologist Marc Laniado explained that bladder cancer can create similar symptoms because tumors may irritate the bladder lining and cause bleeding. While UTIs are common and often improve quickly with antibiotics, repeated symptoms or unclear test results should not be ignored.

The most common warning sign of bladder cancer is blood in the urine, even if there is no pain. Other possible symptoms include needing to urinate more often, sudden urges to urinate, burning or discomfort, repeated urinary infections, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, back or lower abdominal pain, and feeling generally unwell. Experts emphasize that pain is not always the first warning sign, so waiting for severe discomfort could delay diagnosis. If symptoms continue, return frequently, or urine tests do not confirm an infection, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Although most urinary symptoms are caused by conditions like UTIs, paying attention to unusual or persistent changes can help identify more serious problems sooner.
