The real reason Taylor Parker is still alive and might avoid execution entirely

Since the Taylor Parker case became the subject of a Netflix documentary, many viewers have questioned why she remains alive despite being sentenced to death. Parker was convicted of the 2020 murder of her pregnant friend Reagan Simmons-Hancock in a crime that shocked the nation. Prosecutors said Parker had created a false pregnancy story for months, using fake documents, staged announcements, and other deception before attacking Simmons-Hancock and attempting to take her unborn child. She was sentenced to death in November 2022 and is currently held on Texas’ female death row. However, a death sentence does not immediately lead to an execution date. In Texas, executions only move forward after all major appeals have been completed.

Although Parker’s conviction and sentence were upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case, she still has a remaining legal process known as habeas corpus review. This stage examines whether constitutional issues affected the trial or conviction and can sometimes take years to complete. During this process, lawyers may present new arguments that were not part of the original appeals. If those challenges fail, a court in Bowie County could eventually schedule an execution date. However, there is no guarantee of how long the process will take or what the final outcome will be. Some death row cases are delayed for years because of ongoing legal challenges. Parker’s case remains active in the courts, meaning her execution is not automatic or immediate despite the severity of the crime and her death sentence.
