Bill Gates has expanded his predictions about the future of work in the age of artificial intelligence, saying only four types of jobs are likely to remain largely protected from automation. The Microsoft co-founder previously identified coders, biologists, and energy workers as professions that would continue to rely heavily on human expertise. He has now added professional athletes to that list, arguing that people will always prefer watching humans compete rather than machines. Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gates suggested that while AI will transform many industries, sports will remain a uniquely human form of entertainment. He also made a striking comment that humans may not be needed “for most things” in the future, although society will ultimately decide which roles should remain human-led. Gates believes AI will become increasingly capable of handling manufacturing, transportation, and even food production, making many routine tasks more automated over time. However, he maintains that fields requiring creativity, scientific discovery, complex decision-making, and human competition will continue to rely on people despite rapid technological advances.

Gates’ comments come as concerns grow over AI’s impact on employment worldwide. A Microsoft study released in 2025 identified dozens of occupations that could be heavily influenced by AI, including interpreters, translators, historians, mathematicians, proofreaders, writers, journalists, sales representatives, and technical writers. Researchers emphasized that the report measured how AI could assist with job tasks rather than predicting complete replacement, but it still highlighted how rapidly automation is reshaping the workplace. Meanwhile, studies have shown companies are increasingly adopting AI to improve efficiency, contributing to job losses in some sectors. Despite these concerns, Gates argues that AI should be viewed as a powerful tool that enhances productivity rather than simply eliminating jobs. He acknowledges that no one can predict the future with certainty, noting that technological revolutions have always reshaped the workforce in unexpected ways. As AI continues to evolve, experts believe adaptability, continuous learning, and developing uniquely human skills will become increasingly important for long-term career success.
