Police Share Health Update on Family Injured in M9 Wrong-Way Crash — Four Remain in Hospital

A family of four is still recovering in hospital after a devastating head-on collision on Ireland’s M9 that claimed the lives of five teenagers. The crash happened in the early hours of Sunday in County Kildare when a BMW traveling in the wrong direction struck a Hyundai carrying the family. Jeremy O’Brien, 18, Alex McCarthy, 17, Joey Carthy, 15, Jack Kennedy, 17, and Kamil Pustkowski, 17, were all killed. Gardaí had reportedly tried to stop the BMW before it entered the motorway but could not safely follow once it began moving against traffic. Investigators initially believed the vehicle may have been stolen, though police later said it might have been legitimately purchased by one of the teenagers. Attention has now turned to the four people in the Hyundai and the difficult medical fight they face.

Police said the female driver and the person traveling in the front passenger seat remained critically ill at Tallaght University Hospital in south Dublin. A woman who had been sitting in the back was described as being in serious condition and was later transferred to another hospital. A seven-year-old boy who was also in the rear of the Hyundai was receiving treatment at a children’s hospital in Crumlin, with reports indicating he suffered a broken leg. Authorities are also examining whether the BMW’s actions were connected to a dangerous social-media trend involving drivers deliberately traveling the wrong way for online attention. As relatives waited for news from hospital rooms, investigators were still trying to determine exactly what happened in the final minutes before the collision.

The tragedy has renewed concern about reckless driving after another recent wrong-way incident on the M50 involving eight teenagers in a Toyota Yaris. Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemned the behavior and said some dangerous acts are carried out in pursuit of social-media attention, while Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly emphasized the risk posed to innocent motorists and emergency crews. The M9 incident has also been referred to Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman, meaning Gardaí have said they are limited in what they can publicly discuss while the investigation continues. Longer-term matters involving an attorney, insurance, court proceedings, mortgage obligations, investment losses, or estate questions have not been publicly detailed and may depend on the outcome of the investigation and the family’s recovery. For now, officials have focused on the condition of the injured passengers and the circumstances that placed two vehicles on a collision course.

Families of the five teenagers have meanwhile shared emotional tributes after their identities were confirmed, remembering them as sons, friends, and young people whose lives ended suddenly. Jeremy O’Brien’s mother, Margaret, wrote about the pain of losing her son and the pride she felt in being his mother, while others remembered Joey Carthy for his kindness and potential. Authorities have urged drivers to recognize that deliberately entering a motorway against traffic can leave consequences far beyond the people inside one vehicle. Behind the headlines are two groups of families now facing very different forms of grief and uncertainty. As investigators continue their work, the most immediate hope remains that the four people in the Hyundai—especially those still critically ill—can recover from a collision that changed multiple families in a matter of seconds.
