British Newlyweds Die in Greece Helicopter Crash — Tributes Remember a Beloved Couple

A honeymoon trip to the Greek island of Sifnos ended in tragedy when a private helicopter carrying British newlyweds Alex Cromie, 31, and Marie Ebert, 30, crashed shortly before its scheduled landing. The couple had recently married and were traveling together when the aircraft came down in the Tholos area, near residential homes. Their pilot, Giorgos Raikos, 55, also lost his life. Witnesses reported seeing smoke as the helicopter approached the helipad, while video shared online appeared to show the aircraft turning before rapidly losing altitude. The crash sparked a large fire, bringing emergency crews rushing to the scene. The helicopter had departed from Markopoulo, near Athens, for what should have been the beginning of a joyful stay on one of Greece’s best-known island destinations.

As investigators began examining what happened, tributes quickly emerged from the workplaces of both newlyweds. Cromie had spent four years at Blackstone and had recently become a vice president in private wealth solutions, while Ebert worked as a senior specialist with Bain & Company in London. Blackstone described Cromie as beloved by those who knew and worked with him, and Bain called Ebert a deeply respected colleague with an exceptional future ahead of her. Meanwhile, aviation specialists focused on the helicopter’s final moments, including reports of an unusual turn and a strange sound heard by residents. But the most important question remained unanswered: what caused an experienced pilot to suddenly lose control just moments before landing?

Greek authorities have opened a formal investigation through the National Organisation for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety. Aviation expert Pantelis Fragoulis told local media that the sharp turn observed during the approach could potentially point to a problem involving the helicopter’s tail section, though he also raised the possibility of a sudden medical emergency affecting the pilot. Sifnos deputy mayor Manolis Fountoulakis said residents reported hearing an abnormal noise and expressed his belief that a mechanical problem may have occurred, but an official cause has not yet been established. For the families, the investigation may eventually become important not only for understanding the final moments of the flight but also for practical matters involving insurance, an estate, a mortgage, or an investment account. Depending on the findings, an attorney may assist relatives with documentation or claims, although no court determination regarding responsibility has been reported. Authorities said the helicopter crashed only minutes before its scheduled 6:15 p.m. arrival, adding another painful detail to a journey that was almost complete.

Raikos was reportedly a former member of the Hellenic Army who became a helicopter pilot after retiring from military service, making the sudden loss of control especially troubling to those examining the case. British officials said they were communicating with local authorities and were prepared to provide consular assistance to those affected. At Blackstone and Bain, colleagues were left mourning two young professionals whose careers had been moving forward just as they were beginning married life together. The investigation will now focus on evidence from the aircraft, witness accounts, flight information, and the conditions surrounding the approach to Sifnos. For the families and friends of Cromie, Ebert, and Raikos, however, the lasting memory will extend far beyond the circumstances of the crash: three lives were lost during a journey that was meant to mark the beginning of a new chapter.
