Miley Cyrus Called Her “Aunt Dolly” for a Reason — The Story Behind Their Lifelong Bond

As tributes gathered around Dolly Parton, one small name carried unusual weight: “Aunt Dolly.” Miley Cyrus had used it for years, long after becoming a Grammy-winning star with a career of her own. Their connection stretched far beyond awards shows, television cameos, or a convenient celebrity friendship. Parton had known Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, since the early 1990s, when “Achy Breaky Heart” made him a country sensation. Reuters later estimated Parton’s fortune at about $450 million, but the bond at the heart of this story was never about money. It began quietly, before Miley was old enough to understand how famous the woman beside her would become.

Fans saw part of that closeness on Hannah Montana, where Miley played the teenage pop star who made her a household name. Parton appeared on the Disney Channel series as Aunt Dolly, beginning with the 2006 episode “Good Golly, Miss Dolly,” turning a real-life relationship into part of the show. The two performed together, and Miley continued calling her “Aunt Dolly” away from the cameras. It seemed like a charming television nickname—but the reason behind it went back much further, to a request Billy Ray made when Miley was still a newborn.

As Miley’s career grew, Parton became less of a ceremonial figure and more of a trusted mentor. Dolly said Miley would run ideas by her, while praising her as smart, intuitive about the business, and an extraordinary talent. Their musical paths kept crossing: Miley recorded “Rainbowland” with Parton for 2017’s Younger Now, performed “Jolene,” and later joined Dolly on her 2023 Rockstar project, where Parton covered “Wrecking Ball.” Their relationship was never defined by an attorney, insurance policy, mortgage, investment, estate document, or court filing. What mattered was the personal trust behind it. Parton repeatedly described Miley as being like one of her own, and their collaborations made that affection visible to millions who watched Miley grow from a Disney teenager into an adult artist.

The real story began in 1992, when Dolly and Billy Ray became friends after he toured with her following the success of “Achy Breaky Heart.” Miley was born on November 23 that year, and Parton later recalled that Billy Ray simply told her she had to be his daughter’s godmother. Dolly accepted, although she said there was never a large formal ceremony. Years later, she still spoke about Miley with unmistakable pride, while Miley’s affectionate “Aunt Dolly” made the relationship feel more like family than an honorary title. After Parton’s death at age 80 on August 25, 2026, that nickname took on an even deeper meaning for fans revisiting their decades together. Behind the television appearances, duets, and famous last names was something remarkably simple: a friendship between two country singers became a lifelong bond with the daughter one of them had just welcomed into the world.
