Among them, one fan praised Dollywood, the 165-acre Tennessee theme park Parton helped transform and co-owned for decades. The person specifically pointed to its $99 single-day admission price, saying Dolly had kept the park reasonably priced despite a difficult economy. Then an account belonging to Pennsylvania’s Hersheypark entered the conversation. Its response was only a few words long, but screenshots began spreading almost immediately. What looked like an ordinary price comparison suddenly seemed strikingly out of place.
The Hersheypark account responded by pointing out that its summer tickets cost $49.99. The message disappeared quickly, but users had already saved it and began demanding an explanation. Some called the reply tactless, while others questioned why a competing amusement park would promote its own prices beneath a discussion honoring someone who had just died. Hersheypark soon said the response had been intended as a correction about ticket pricing and had been posted without understanding the surrounding conversation. But by then, the screenshot had taken on a life of its own—and the park still had to explain how the mistake happened.
The controversy was especially noticeable because Dollywood itself was responding to Parton’s death in an entirely different way. The Tennessee attraction had been closely tied to her identity since she joined the park in 1986, eventually turning it into one of the best-known family destinations in the region. Her legacy there was not simply an investment measured by ticket revenue, insurance policies, a mortgage, an attorney, estate paperwork or anything that might eventually reach a court. Parton envisioned the park as a place built around families, music and her Smoky Mountain roots. Her philanthropy extended well beyond its gates, including children’s literacy programs and a $1 million contribution to COVID-19 research at Vanderbilt. Dollywood President Eugene Naughton said employees intended to continue carrying forward her values, while the park remained open rather than shutting down in mourning. That made the competing park’s brief pricing comment appear even more jarring to critics watching the exchange.
Hersheypark eventually issued a fuller apology and explained the detail that had been missing from the original reply. According to the park, a member of its social-media team noticed what they believed was inaccurate Hersheypark pricing information and intended only to correct that individual point, without realizing the response would appear inside a conversation about Dolly and Dollywood. The comment was removed once the context became clear. Hersheypark said it joined millions mourning Parton and apologized for any insensitivity. Meanwhile, Dollywood continued operating as Parton had wanted, emphasizing a phrase closely associated with her work ethic: the show must go on. In the end, a difference between $99 and $49.99 was never really what angered people. It was the timing—and the reminder that on social media, a few words posted in the wrong place can completely change how a message is received.
