Ricky Schroder Draws Fresh Backlash Over Dolly Parton Posts — His Latest Message Intensified the Reaction

The criticism spread quickly across social media, turning what began as a celebrity remembrance into an unexpected controversy. Actor Ricky Schroder, 56, had worked closely enough with Dolly Parton to portray her father in two television movies, making his reaction especially noticeable to longtime fans. He appeared in Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors in 2015 and returned for Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love the following year. Parton personally selected Schroder for the role inspired by her father, Robert Lee Parton. After Parton died at age 80 on August 25 following what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer, celebrities and fans began sharing memories of her life and work. But Schroder’s contribution soon stood apart from the flood of affectionate tributes—and not for the reason many expected.

Reaction grew after readers noticed that Schroder’s message did more than thank Parton for choosing him as her on-screen father. Instead, he used part of the tribute to emphasize disagreements he had with two causes she publicly supported: transgender rights and COVID-19 vaccination. Katie Couric responded with a brief expression of disapproval, while Boy George and actor Jay Huguley also criticized the tone. Fans questioned why a disagreement needed to be included in a memorial message at all. Schroder did not immediately retreat from the subject, however, and another message soon appeared on his Instagram Story—one that pushed the controversy even further.

Parton’s support for vaccination had a significant financial history behind it. She donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for COVID-19 research, funding work that contributed to development of the Moderna vaccine, and she later publicly received the vaccine herself. Her charitable reputation also extended far beyond health research through programs such as the Imagination Library, which distributed books to children around the world. The dispute surrounding Schroder was not an attorney matter, an insurance claim, a mortgage disagreement, an investment dispute, an estate battle, or anything headed for court; it was a public argument over what people considered appropriate to say while memorializing someone. That distinction mattered because Parton had spent decades trying to avoid partisan fights even while supporting causes she believed could help people. Her public image was built as much around generosity and inclusion as around the songs and movies that made her famous.

The key details explaining the renewed outrage came later. In his original Instagram tribute, Schroder said he loved Parton while also stating that he disagreed with her advocacy involving transgender people and COVID vaccines, before thanking her for allowing him to be her “Movie Daddy.” After that post drew criticism, Schroder shared an older video of Parton promoting vaccination and added another message: “I warned Dolly to not support the experiment. Wished she listened.” That second post was particularly striking because Parton’s reported cause of death was cancer, not something publicly tied to her vaccination history. The timing and implication fueled another wave of criticism, while Schroder had not provided evidence connecting the two. As tributes from Miley Cyrus and other stars continued focusing on Parton’s music, generosity and personal warmth, the controversy became less about whether Schroder was entitled to disagree with her and more about why he chose the days immediately following her death to make those disagreements part of her farewell.
