Dolly Parton’s Private Road to Motherhood — Why Miley Cyrus Became Like Family

Behind Dolly Parton’s dazzling costumes and enormous career was a family dream that quietly disappeared. She and Carl Thomas Dean had been married since May 30, 1966, and for years they imagined what children of their own might be like. Dolly wondered whether they would be tall like Carl or short like her. The couple even had a possible name picked out for a daughter: Carla. Yet while Dolly’s fame continued rising, painful health problems were developing away from the stage. In 1982, severe abdominal bleeding forced her to seek medical treatment and cancel a tour. No dollar amount could soften what doctors would eventually tell her about the future she had pictured.

Two years later, Dolly underwent a partial hysterectomy and learned that she would not be able to have biological children. She later described the period that followed as emotionally devastating, saying she fell into a depression and reduced some of her professional commitments. With time, however, Dolly began looking at the situation differently. She came to believe there might be another purpose for all the love she had expected to give her own children. Then a friendship with another country singer would unexpectedly give her a very different kind of family role.

That singer was Billy Ray Cyrus, whose friendship with Dolly eventually led to her becoming godmother to his daughter, Miley Cyrus. Dolly took that relationship seriously as Miley grew from a child into the teenage star of Hannah Montana. She watched Miley work with the pride of a mother, praised her professionalism and later defended her when the young singer faced criticism while changing her public image. Their relationship was never defined by an attorney, insurance agreement, mortgage, investment, estate arrangement or court document. Dolly simply became “Aunt Dolly,” offering advice when Miley asked for it without trying to control her choices. Miley later credited her godmother with teaching her to remain grounded, respect everyone on a production set and avoid letting sudden fame change her character. They eventually performed together, hosted television together and recorded each other’s songs, including their 2023 collaboration on “Wrecking Ball.” Dolly once said Miley reminded her of herself—a talented young woman trying to find her own place and learn how to use her wings.

The deeper reason Dolly embraced that relationship went back to the motherhood she never experienced herself. She said she eventually believed that if she had raised children, guilt over touring and working might have caused her to give up much of the career she built. Instead, she came to see other people’s children as partly her own, while Miley became the clearest example of that philosophy. Their bond remained so affectionate that Dolly called herself Miley’s “fairy godmother,” while Miley described Dolly as both an idol and a role model. Carl Dean died in March 2025 at age 82 after nearly 59 years of marriage, and Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80. She never became a biological mother, but the final shape of her family was larger than the one she once imagined: a goddaughter she watched like a proud mama, relatives she loved, and generations of young people who grew up seeing Dolly as something close to family.
