His telephone rang repeatedly—four urgent calls warned that a glacier near the Tibet border could release a devastating surge of water, ice, and mud. Then an anxious parent rushed onto the school grounds, insisting that a massive flood was coming and demanding to take her daughter home. Dawadi had no official siren, written evacuation order, or time to hold a meeting. He knew dismissing classes might prove unnecessary, but losing one school day was a small price compared with risking hundreds of lives. Within moments, he ordered everyone to leave.

Some students boarded buses and were sent away from the threatened area, while teachers directed hundreds of others toward higher ground. Several teenagers hesitated because the morning still appeared normal, and some remained inside waiting for friends. Sixteen-year-old Yunisha Amatya was among those who initially struggled to understand the danger. Dawadi continued urging everyone uphill, refusing to wait for further confirmation. Roughly 10 minutes after his decision, a violent wall of floodwater tore through the community—and the children saw exactly what had been racing toward them.

The surge reportedly engulfed a hostel near the school and swept through the nearby bazaar as students scrambled up a narrow ladder behind the building. Amatya said she could not move quickly, so friends helped pull her toward safer ground while frightened residents crowded the escape route. She believed her group survived by mere seconds; people who chose another path were reportedly carried away by the water. The disaster caused extensive loss of life and left many residents missing, but Dawadi, his staff, and approximately 900 students survived. Their families would later face damaged homes, interrupted jobs, insurance questions, mortgage obligations, and the possible loss of every investment tied to the area. Some residents might need an attorney to manage property claims, estate documents, or disputes that could eventually reach court. Yet no financial recovery could match the value of the principal’s decision: he acted before certainty arrived, when hesitation would have been easier.

The students were eventually airlifted from the danger zone, and Dawadi later said he felt proud that so many lives had been saved. He also acknowledged how narrow their escape had been, explaining that a delay of only 10 minutes could have produced an unimaginable outcome. Now he is calling on Nepalese authorities to establish stronger warning systems, including dependable sirens and rapid evacuation alerts for vulnerable communities.
