Lionel Richie Requests a Chair During Final Song — Hospital Visit Reveals the Suspected Cause

The crowd was still dancing when Lionel Richie suddenly signaled toward the side of the stage. Moments later, a crew member carried out a black chair during the 77-year-old singer’s closing performance of “All Night Long.” Richie had spent the August 29, 2026, concert at The Muny in St. Louis smiling, playing piano, and entertaining fans beneath fiery stage lights. No ticket revenue or medical costs were disclosed, but the one-night appearance followed a major North American tour. Even after sitting down, Richie kept singing and raised an arm toward the audience. What spectators did not yet know was that he had already been searching for answers about a troubling health issue.

Richie told the audience that unusual symptoms during the tour had “shook” him because he could not understand what was happening. He drank electrolytes onstage, joking about their unpleasant taste and fellow “American Idol” judge Luke Bryan’s humorous hydration advice. After briefly sitting, Richie returned to his feet, bowed, and repeatedly wished the crowd good night. Concertgoers later praised his humor, voice, and commanding stage presence. Hours after the applause faded, however, Richie reportedly checked himself into a St. Louis hospital—and doctors focused on a familiar explanation.

The incident raised practical questions about medical care and insurance, though no attorney, court filing, mortgage concern, investment disclosure, or estate issue was involved. It also followed a frightening moment during Richie’s June 24 tour opener at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. While performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” he reportedly felt dizzy and strange, forcing him to sit on the stage platform. Saxophonist Dino Soldo eventually announced that Richie could not continue, and paramedics transported him to a hospital as a precaution. His wife, Brenda Harvey Richie, later reassured concerned fans that he was okay and expected to perform again.

Following the St. Louis show, TMZ reported that Richie remained hospitalized while doctors performed tests and that he hoped to be released Tuesday. Sources described the stay as a cautious measure rather than evidence of a publicly confirmed serious condition. The suspected problem also matched what Richie said his own physician had previously identified after he sought answers during the tour. Despite needing a chair for part of his final number, he completed the concert and walked offstage under his own power. According to the reports available at the time, the two-word cause doctors were examining was “slight dehydration.
