Lionel Richie Dazzles St. Louis in a Bright Yellow Jacket — Then the Night Takes an Unexpected Turn

Lionel Richie stretched both arms toward the crowd as fiery images glowed across the stage behind him. Wearing a bright yellow jacket over a dark outfit, the 77-year-old entertainer appeared every inch the seasoned showman at The Muny in St. Louis. The August 29, 2026, concert celebrated music spanning five decades, from his Commodores years to his greatest solo hits. Fans described Richie as charming, funny, energetic, and fully in control of the packed venue. No official dollar figure was released for the one-night production, which featured huge screens, elaborate lighting, and pyrotechnic effects. Photographs captured a joyful performance, but the closing song revealed that something was wrong.

Richie later changed into a red jacket and moved around the stage with a microphone as his band played “All Night Long.” Near the end, witnesses said he appeared to struggle and signaled toward the side of the stage. A crew member brought out a black chair, and Richie sat while continuing to sing and gesture toward the audience. Two musicians remained close, playing guitar and bass beside him. Richie eventually stood, bowed, and repeatedly wished the crowd good night—but what happened hours later transformed those final images into a serious cause for concern.

TMZ reported that Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital for testing and was admitted to intensive care as a precaution. Sources said doctors were investigating possible mild dehydration and that he hoped to be discharged on September 1. The situation centered on medical care and insurance rather than an attorney, mortgage, investment, estate, or court dispute, and no detailed diagnosis was initially announced. The hospitalization followed a similar incident during his June 24 tour opener in St. Paul, Minnesota. That night, Richie reportedly felt dizzy and strange while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” forcing him to sit before the concert ended early and paramedics transported him to a hospital.

The St. Louis performance came shortly after Richie completed his “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, which traveled across the United States and Canada from June 24 through August 14. Fans who attended The Muny show continued praising his voice and stage presence while sending messages of support. Their concern reflected what the photographs could not fully show: an artist determined to finish for his audience even while his body demanded rest. The yellow jacket made Richie impossible to miss that night, but the chair beside him became the image people remembered afterward.
