Small Sticker Draws Attention During Lindsay Clancy Trial — Its Meaning Sparks Debate

A small pink sticker attached to Lindsay Clancy’s wheelchair unexpectedly became a focus of attention inside Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts. The sticker, placed near a drink holder containing a bottle of Diet Coke, displayed the word “#sidebah.” Online observers quickly connected the phrase to defense attorney Kevin Reddington’s Boston-accented pronunciation of “sidebar.” Clancy, 36, appeared in court as jurors continued deliberating after an emotionally difficult five-week trial. She is accused of killing her three young children in January 2023 and has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. No financial damages or dollar amounts are involved because this is a criminal case, yet the proceedings have attracted intense national interest.

It remains unclear who placed the sticker on the wheelchair or whether Clancy personally approved it. Even so, several social-media users criticized its humorous appearance, arguing that any joke-like message seemed inappropriate during such a serious court proceeding. Others cautioned against assuming the sticker reflected Clancy’s intentions without additional information. As debate spread online, a more consequential disagreement was unfolding among the jurors—and it threatened to determine whether the trial would end with a verdict at all.

Clancy’s defense has not disputed that she caused the children’s deaths, but her attorney maintains that severe mental illness and postpartum psychosis prevented her from being criminally responsible. Prosecuting attorney Jennifer Sprague has argued that Clancy planned her actions and understood the difference between right and wrong. Unlike a civil dispute involving insurance, a mortgage, an investment, or an estate, this court case centers on criminal responsibility and the demanding standard of reasonable doubt. After six days of deliberations, the nine-woman, three-man jury remained unable to agree. Judge William Sullivan issued a Tuey-Rodriguez instruction, sometimes called a “dynamite charge,” encouraging jurors to reconsider their positions without surrendering honestly held beliefs.

The tension increased when Reddington claimed one juror was refusing to follow the judge’s directions concerning reasonable doubt. He asked Sullivan to remove that individual, warning that the dispute could produce a mistrial. Sprague opposed the request, and the judge privately questioned each juror before reviewing the legal standard once more. No juror was removed, and deliberations were ordered to continue. The session ended without a decision, leaving the sticker controversy overshadowed by the case’s central development: the jury would return at 9 a.m. Friday for another attempt to reach a unanimous verdict.
