Linda Purl’s Life Took an Unexpected Turn — The Three Words From Patrick Duffy That Changed Everything

Linda Purl’s life has been anything but ordinary. Born in Connecticut and raised in Japan, she became the only foreign student accepted into the Toho Geino Academy before performing at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre in productions including The King and I, Oliver, and The Miracle Worker. After further training in England and at the Lee Strasberg Institute, she built a diverse career spanning television, Broadway, film, and music. Audiences came to know her through roles on Happy Days, Matlock, The Office, True Blood, and Homeland, but her years on Happy Days became especially meaningful. She played Ashley Pfister, Fonzie’s fiancée, and developed a deeply affectionate bond with young co-star Heather O’Rourke, often welcoming her into her home. Heather’s passing at just 12 remained one of the most heartbreaking experiences of Purl’s life. She also remembered Lucille Ball warmly after briefly being married to Desi Arnaz Jr., describing the legendary actress as supportive and loving.

Yet one of the sweetest chapters of Purl’s story arrived decades after she first met fellow actor Patrick Duffy. The two had known each other casually since 1980, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, their friendship unexpectedly transformed. Separated by hundreds of miles, they began talking every night through FaceTime and Zoom, sometimes for hours about books, music, art, and life. Then, during one ordinary goodbye, Duffy accidentally said three words that changed everything: “I love you.” The confession left him stunned, but instead of pulling away, Purl embraced what had grown between them. Soon afterward, Duffy drove roughly 1,300 miles from Oregon to Colorado, and they finally shared their first kiss. Their relationship blossomed into a lasting partnership, creative collaboration, and even a sourdough business. At 71, Purl’s story remains a beautiful reminder that some of life’s most unexpected chapters can begin after years of friendship.
