25 Years Later, Brian Sweeney’s Final 9/11 Voicemail Still Moves Hearts — The Words He Left for His Wife

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, some memories remain as powerful as ever. Among the many stories preserved from that heartbreaking day is the final voicemail left by Brian Sweeney for his wife, Julie Roth. Sweeney was aboard United Flight 175 when it was hijacked, and before the plane crashed into the World Trade Center, he used a seat-back phone to leave Julie a message. She was teaching at the time when her mother-in-law called to tell her that Brian was on the plane. When Julie eventually returned home, she discovered the recording waiting for her. His message was filled not only with sadness but with love, as he reassured her of how deeply he cared for her and encouraged her to continue living her life. Brian was 38 years old, while Julie was 29. Those few words would become something Julie carried with her for decades, offering a final connection to the husband she loved.

To Julie, the recording also revealed the person Brian had always been: strong, caring, and devoted to the people around him. A former U.S. Navy pilot and Gulf War veteran, he was remembered as someone who seemed almost invincible, yet he also had a gentle and affectionate side. The couple had met in Philadelphia, later married on Cape Cod, and built a life together. Years after Brian’s death, Julie remarried and became a mother, while continuing to honor his memory and help preserve the stories of September 11. Brian’s voicemail became part of the collection at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York. Julie has said the recording gave her something precious—the certainty of knowing what Brian wanted her to hear in his final moments. His words continue to remind her that remembering the past and moving forward can exist together.
