Linda Purl’s life has taken her from childhood performances in Japan to beloved American television roles, Broadway stages, and a later-in-life romance that surprised even her. Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, and raised in Japan, Purl became the only foreign student accepted to train at the Toho Geino Academy. She performed at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre in productions including The King and I, Oliver, and The Miracle Worker before continuing her studies in England and the United States. Her career eventually brought her to Happy Days, where she first played Gloria, Richie Cunningham’s girlfriend, and later returned as Ashley Pfister, Fonzie’s fiancée. Away from the cameras, she formed a particularly close bond with Heather O’Rourke, who played Ashley’s daughter. Purl welcomed the young actress into her home for meals and overnight stays, creating memories she would carry for decades. Purl was in New York while Duffy was at his Oregon ranch, but regular messages soon became nightly FaceTime and Zoom conversations lasting hours. They discussed books, music, art, and life, gradually discovering a connection neither had expected. Then came the moment that changed everything. During one late-night goodbye, Duffy accidentally said, “I love you,” before realizing what he had revealed. Instead of pulling away, the two embraced their growing feelings and eventually fell in love while living about 1,300 miles apart. Duffy later drove roughly 23 hours from Oregon to Colorado to see Purl, even stopping briefly to prepare himself before arriving. Their first kiss marked the beginning of a new chapter. Today, their relationship has grown into a shared life filled with acting, travel, music, and their sourdough business, Duffy’s Dough.
