Their decision to live in the UK again does not restore the official duties they gave up in 2020, meaning their charitable activities and professional projects will continue in a private capacity rather than on behalf of the King.

The clarification could become increasingly important as Harry, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet settle into life in Britain. Harry is expected to remain involved with causes such as the Invictus Games, while Meghan may continue developing her own professional interests, but neither can present those activities as official royal engagements. The Palace also confirmed that questions involving official courtesies or potential public funding should be directed to Buckingham Palace, while security decisions remain with the relevant authorities. The timing reportedly surprised Harry and Meghan, although the substance of the message largely reaffirmed an arrangement already established years ago. Their return may create new opportunities for family connections, particularly with Charles and the wider royal circle, but it does not reopen the “half-in, half-out” arrangement once considered for the Sussexes. For now, Britain may once again be home, but the Palace has made clear that homecoming and royal reinstatement are two very different things.
