A heartbreaking detail has emerged following the Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, after one of the pilots reportedly used an airport employee’s phone to call his wife shortly after the incident. The Boeing 767-300 had been attempting to land on September 6 when it overran the runway, crossed through an airport perimeter fence and struck two vehicles. Five people lost their lives and five others were injured. Miami International staffer Abraham Altamar told CBS that the pilot appeared shaken and had minor injuries but was able to make the call. According to Altamar, the pilot told his wife to let his mother know that he had been involved in the accident but was already out of the aircraft and was okay. He reportedly added that he believed his career was over. At that moment, it remains unclear whether the pilot knew the full extent of what had happened around him.

Investigators are now working to understand exactly what caused the crash, with the National Transportation Safety Board examining the aircraft’s flight data and other recovered information. Officials are considering several possibilities, including whether the plane touched down too far along the runway to stop safely, as well as braking performance, weather and wind conditions, and the aircraft’s mechanical condition. The cargo aircraft was operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Air and had traveled from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before returning to Miami. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy described the crash site as “utter devastation,” while emergency crews carried out a complex response involving dozens of units and hundreds of personnel. Amazon has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said it will cooperate fully with investigators as they work to determine what happened.
