Inside were photographs, envelopes, a camera, children’s clothing, and handwritten information connected to children along the school bus route. Melissa soon admitted she had taken the bag from her older brother, Darren, after becoming suspicious that he was watching the school bus. She said she had planned to contact police but became frightened and hid the evidence instead. Jacob had also noticed a gray truck repeatedly near the route, which explained his warning. Police eventually located Darren nearby and arrested him after finding evidence that raised serious concerns about his activities. Melissa was not arrested, but she lost her position with our family because she had placed a frightening secret on a child’s shoulders. Before leaving, she apologized to Ethan and admitted that adults should never ask children to hide something that makes them afraid.
