9/11 Firefighter’s Final Radio Message — Seven Minutes Later, the South Tower Collapsed

Orio Palmer was among the firefighters who rushed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, determined to help those trapped inside. The 45-year-old FDNY battalion chief had two decades of experience and carried roughly 50 pounds of equipment as he climbed the South Tower. After helping restore critical radio communications, Palmer and his team reached the 40th floor by elevator before continuing upward on foot. He kept colleagues informed throughout the climb, reporting his location and the conditions they were encountering. Eventually, he reached the 78th floor, where he discovered two separate areas of fire and calmly told his fellow firefighters that they should be able to contain them with two hose lines.

Palmer continued communicating as he and his team worked higher inside the tower, unaware that there was almost no time left. His radio messages documented the difficult conditions and the presence of numerous civilians who had already lost their lives. Just seven minutes after one of his final reports, the South Tower collapsed, taking Palmer and many other rescuers with it. He left behind three children and seven grandchildren, while his wife, Debbie, died years later in 2021. Today, his family remembers not only what he did that morning, but the way he lived his life before it. On a website created to honor his legacy, his children wrote that their father’s actions continue to inspire people to show courage, work harder, and stand stronger. Nearly 25 years later, Palmer’s final radio messages remain a lasting record of a firefighter who kept helping others until the very end.
