A family vacation meant to celebrate a son’s wedding ended in heartbreak when Minnesota pastor Stephen Junker, 58, passed away weeks after suffering a serious medical emergency aboard a cruise ship. Junker had been traveling on the Sun Princess when he fell into a swimming pool on August 16 during the voyage near Italy. His family said he was found unresponsive and was quickly taken ashore by the Italian Coast Guard before being admitted to a hospital in Naples. Doctors discovered a severe cervical spinal cord injury and performed emergency surgery the following day. Despite the efforts of medical teams, the extent of his injuries left him with significant physical challenges and dependent on a ventilator for breathing. His loved ones then worked to bring him back to Minnesota so he could continue receiving specialized care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Sadly, further testing revealed that his injuries could not be treated. On September 4 at 6:33 p.m., Junker passed away surrounded by his wife Jeanine, his children, parents, and close friends. His family expressed deep gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him and to everyone who offered financial and emotional support during the difficult weeks. Junker had spent nearly a decade serving as a pastor and was remembered for his energetic sermons, warmth, love of conversation, and willingness to help others. His wife described him as a wonderful person who was deeply loved. Princess Cruises also shared condolences, saying its thoughts were with Junker’s family and loved ones. What began as a joyful journey for a family celebration ultimately became a painful goodbye to a man remembered for the people he touched.
