Emma Thompson opened up about how she had felt ‘half alive’ after discovering that her husband at the time Kenneth Branagh had been having an affair with Helena Bonham Carter.Thompson, 67, has previously said how she felt ‘humiliated’ when the affair came to light, saying that she had been ‘utterly, utterly blind’ to the infidelity before eventually discovering it.The pair got married in 1989 after first meeting on the set of the BBC series Fortunes of War two years earlier in 1987, where she said she was won over by Branagh being ‘incandescent with ambition and performance energy’.In an interview with The New Yorker in November 2022, Thompson said that they had ‘clashed claws’ and even said they were like ‘two mating lobsters’.
Branagh and Thompson would star together in several films while they were together, including Dead Again, as well as Shakespearean adaptations Henry V, and Much Ado About Nothing. However, they would announce their divorce in 1995 after six years of marriage, saying at the time that they were separating due to never seeing each other due to their work schedules, detailing how they had drifted apart’ due to ‘spending long periods of time away from each other’.But Thompson would later reveal that the separation had actually been because of Branagh’s deceit. She discovered that he had an affair with Bonham Carter, 60, who was starring in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It is believed to have began while he was directing the 1994 Oscar-nominated film.
