He Risked Everything to Stop a School Shooting — His Mother Reveals the Heartbreaking Words He Still Can’t Forget

Kaylub Giamanco was heading home for lunch on October 15, 2026, when gunfire erupted near Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The 36-year-old contractor immediately realized the danger was close to home: his two children were inside the school. After witnessing a teenager fire at a truck before rushing toward the building, Kaylub grabbed his legally owned .40-caliber pistol and followed the attacker. He entered through a window shattered by gunfire and discovered a teacher desperately fighting to protect children in a classroom serving students with special needs. The teacher had reportedly thrown her phone at the gunman before tackling him, trying to prevent further bloodshed. Kaylub intervened during the struggle, fatally shooting the 16-year-old attacker and helping bring the horrifying incident to an end. Police praised Kaylub, the courageous teacher, and the truck driver who called 911 for their actions. Tragically, however, four people had already lost their lives: three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Another child and a teacher were wounded.

After the shooting, Kaylub called his mother, Kenda Freeman, in Sacramento and delivered words she would never forget: “Mom, I just shot and killed somebody.” She reassured her son that he had acted to protect others, but the emotional weight of the experience continued to haunt him. Despite being praised as a hero, Kaylub reportedly struggled with the lives he could not save, telling his mother, “Mom, I couldn’t save them all.” Kenda said her son was deeply traumatized and was trying to process what he had witnessed. Both of his children survived, bringing immense relief to the family, even as other parents faced unimaginable grief. Meanwhile, the Bend community rallied around the injured, including seven-year-old Saylor Graham and teacher Becky Drury, with fundraisers helping their families manage medical expenses and other costs. Megan Lambert was also remembered for her generosity, including her efforts to help children access volleyball scholarships. For Kenda, pride in her son’s courage came alongside heartbreak for the families who lost loved ones. Her message to others was simple but powerful: “Hug your babies, love your neighbors.”
