A quiet Thursday afternoon turned tragic at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, after a 16-year-old suspected gunman entered the building on October 15, 2026. The first emergency call came at 12:59 p.m., and police ordered a lockdown at 1:01 p.m. Officers arrived just one minute later, but before they reached the school, a community member had reportedly followed the armed teenager inside. The shooting killed three children, ages five, eight, and 11, along with 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old school employee were also critically injured. Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith told CNN she spotted the teenager carrying a long gun and quickly moved her students into a corner for protection. As children prayed and comforted one another, parents across Bend desperately searched for news about their families.
Police said the community member shot the suspect inside the school, and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers then searched the building, assisted the wounded, and worked alongside local agencies and the FBI. Investigators were examining the suspect’s background and his possible connection to the school. Meanwhile, the victims’ stories brought further heartbreak to the community. Lambert’s family remembered her as a compassionate teacher who had finally achieved her dream of working full-time with children who needed additional support. Five-year-old Rhoam Summer was remembered by relatives as an energetic child who loved reading, climbing, and caring for stuffed animals. Flowers, candles, and toys appeared outside the school as residents gathered to mourn. Classes and district activities were canceled, and counseling was offered to those affected. Although the rapid response and bystander intervention became important parts of the investigation, families were left facing an unimaginable loss as Bend began the difficult process of healing.
