Air Force Commander Speaks Out After Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson Falls 170 Feet at Football Game — Investigation Underway

The excitement of a college football game turned into a devastating scene on October 17, 2026, when a U.S. Air Force service member fell approximately 170 feet during a pregame demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. More than 23,000 spectators were present for the University of Texas at San Antonio’s matchup against Navy when the accident occurred. The airman was identified as Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, who had served in the military for 15 years and was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron. He was one of four military personnel scheduled to take part in the demonstration, but during the descent, he appeared to lose his grip and slide down the rope. Emergency responders rushed to help him, but Patterson was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The tragedy prompted an emotional response from Air Force leadership, with the 57th Wing commander expressing profound sadness over the loss. In a statement, the commander emphasized Patterson’s importance to the unit and to the people who knew and served alongside him. Officials said their immediate priority was supporting his family, friends, and fellow airmen as they faced the devastating news. The Air Force also thanked the San Antonio community and its partners at Joint Base San Antonio for their compassion and assistance. Patterson had earned several military honors during his career, including the Air and Space Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air and Space Achievement Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. UTSA officials also shared condolences and activated well-being services for students, faculty, and staff who may have been affected by witnessing the incident. Nellis Air Force Base confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine what happened during the demonstration. Officials have not yet released a final explanation for the fall, leaving questions about the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident unanswered.
