A hot-air balloon carrying 21 people caught fire just meters above the ground in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, killing eight people. The remaining passengers, including the pilot, survived and were taken to hospital. Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) said it is taking all necessary steps to investigate the aircraft’s condition and the crew.
According to police, the pilot reported a fire started inside the basket, prompting an emergency descent. As the balloon neared the ground he told people to jump; some managed to, but others could not. The flames intensified, the added weight caused the balloon to rise again, and it later fell due to loss of lift. Officials said three of the victims were found holding each other.
Gov. Jorginho Mello declared mourning and urged a full inquiry, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva offered condolences and federal support for survivors and local authorities. ANAC is leading the investigation into what caused the blaze and whether safety protocols were followed.
Operator Sobrevoar said it complies with regulations, has no prior accidents, and that the experienced pilot followed recommended procedures. The 45-minute ride—priced around $100 and planned to reach 3,280 feet—took place over Praia Grande, a major tourist draw famed for canyon views and often dubbed the “Brazilian Cappadocia.”
