Donald Trump has claimed he was the victim of a “triple sabotage” during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 23. The 79-year-old spoke for nearly an hour, criticizing open borders, taking aim at London mayor Sadiq Khan, and attacking renewable energy policies. However, after the speech, Trump took to Truth Social to allege that three separate incidents were deliberate attempts to undermine him.
First, he said the escalator taking him and Melania to the main floor suddenly stopped, nearly causing them to fall. Second, when he began speaking, his teleprompter allegedly went completely dark. Finally, Trump claimed the sound in the hall was turned off, leaving many world leaders unable to hear him unless they used interpreters’ earpieces. Afterward, Melania told him she couldn’t hear a word of his speech, which Trump said confirmed his suspicions.
Calling the events “absolutely sabotage,” Trump announced plans to send a letter to the UN Secretary General demanding an immediate investigation. He also asked for security footage of the escalator area to be preserved, particularly footage of the emergency stop button, and confirmed that the Secret Service was now involved.
The UN later responded, explaining the escalator likely stopped because a White House videographer accidentally triggered a safety mechanism designed to prevent injuries. While dismissing deliberate sabotage, they confirmed they would conduct a “thorough investigation” into the teleprompter failure and sound issues to ensure full transparency.
