In court, my ex said, “my son wants to live with me.” the judge asked

Zaden looked up at the judge, then his father, and finally at me. For a brief moment, he was just my little boy again. Then, with surprising maturity, he pulled out his phone and asked, “Your Honor, may I play a recording from last night?” The judge, though hesitant, allowed it. Damian, his father, looked uneasy but curious, clearly unprepared for what was coming.

The recording played, filling the courtroom with Damian’s sharp voice. “You’re going to tell the judge you want to live with me, right? You want to make me happy, don’t you?” Zaden’s small, trembling voice replied, “But I like living with Mom. I don’t want to lie.” Damian’s response was harsh and threatening, showing his attempt to manipulate Zaden into siding with him.

When the recording ended, the courtroom fell silent. The judge’s face turned stern as he addressed Damian. “Mr. Carter, this is coercion. It reflects poorly on your parenting and respect for your son’s autonomy. The current custody arrangement will remain in place.” Damian tried to speak, but the judge silenced him, making it clear manipulation would not be tolerated.

Relief flooded me as I clasped Zaden’s small hand. “Thank you, Zaden. You were so brave,” I whispered. As the gavel struck, I knew the journey ahead would still be difficult, but in that moment, my son had spoken his truth — and together, we had won a small but powerful victory.
