A peaceful Sunday morning turned tragic when gunfire and flames erupted at a Michigan church on September 28, 2025. During a service at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc Township, 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former U.S. Marine, drove his truck through the church doors, opened fire on the congregation, and set the building ablaze. Police fatally shot him minutes later.
Authorities confirmed four deaths, with others injured and several still missing. The ATF reported that gasoline was used to start the fire and found suspected explosive devices, suggesting a premeditated attack, though no motive has been identified.
Sanford, who served in Iraq, had faced personal struggles, including caring for a son with a rare medical condition. Neighbors described him as quiet and helpful, leaving the community shocked. Investigators are now combing through the ruins and Sanford’s home for clues.
The devastated town continues to grieve as officials work to determine what drove the former war hero to commit such horrific violence.
