A Sunday gathering in Michigan turned tragic when an ex-Marine drove into a church and caused a terrifying scene, leaving the local community in shock. The incident happened on September 28, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township. Authorities identified the suspect as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton. Fire crews quickly contained a blaze that broke out, but the church building is now considered a total loss.
According to officials, four people lost their lives and several others were injured, including children. Police Chief William Renye stated that more victims may be found once the building is fully searched. Local police, the FBI, and Michigan State Police are investigating, searching Sanford’s home and devices for clues. While no motive has been confirmed, the investigation has become a top priority.
The Marine Corps confirmed Sanford served from 2004 to 2008 with multiple deployments to Iraq. He was highly decorated, receiving several service medals. Long-time church member Paula described the moment of confusion, recalling how worshippers didn’t know whether to run or take cover. Heartbroken, she shared her devastation at losing friends and seeing the church destroyed.
President Donald Trump responded, calling it a “targeted attack on Christians” and urging prayers for the victims and their families. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and Vice President JD Vance also expressed condolences and pledged support for the ongoing investigation. The church remains closed as the community grieves and authorities work to uncover the motive behind the tragedy.
