My Husband Wants Us to Adopt His Niece — I Threatened to Leave Him

Sarah was struggling with Greg’s request to take in his niece Tammy, especially given Tammy’s fragile health. She loved Greg and respected his sense of family duty, but she feared she wouldn’t be able to give Tammy the care she needed. Sarah knew it was important to communicate honestly, making it clear her hesitation wasn’t rejection, but concern.

To find common ground, Sarah suggested professional guidance. Couples counseling or family therapy could give them both a safe space to share feelings, learn coping strategies, and better understand each other’s perspectives. This way, Greg would see she was committed to a solution, not running away from responsibility.

They also discussed alternatives like co-parenting with Mandy, sharing responsibilities across both families so Tammy would be cared for without the full weight falling on Sarah and Greg. By setting boundaries and working out a collective plan, they could ensure Tammy’s well-being while still moving toward their own dream of building a family.

Finally, Sarah proposed practical planning and even a temporary pause. Talking through the financial and emotional implications, while taking time to reflect, could help them make a thoughtful decision instead of one fueled by pressure. She reassured Greg that this wasn’t rejection — it was about ensuring that any choice they made would truly be the right one for all of them.
