Grandma’s Genius Dryer Vent Cleaning Trick

When my grandmother first shared her method for cleaning a clogged dryer vent, I was skeptical. She didn’t use expensive tools or call a professional—just a few simple household items and years of practical experience. “Trust me,” she said with a smile, “this saves money, keeps your dryer running efficiently, and most importantly, keeps your home safe.”

I quickly realized she was right. Dryer vents may seem harmless, but lint buildup is a leading cause of house fires. Even minor clogs can waste energy, shorten your dryer’s lifespan, and leave clothes damp after a cycle. For seniors or anyone living alone, regular vent maintenance is a simple way to protect your home and save money.

Her method is surprisingly straightforward. You only need three tools: a vacuum with a hose, a flexible vent brush, and a leaf blower. First, unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Use the vacuum to remove lint at the vent opening, then run the flexible brush inside the vent to loosen debris.

Vacuum again to catch any dislodged lint. Finally, take the leaf blower outside and blow through the vent to clear hidden buildup. Reassemble the dryer and run a test cycle—you’ll notice the difference immediately. By combining brushing, suction, and airflow, this hack removes lint safely and efficiently without dismantling your dryer. Done once or twice a year, it significantly reduces fire risk, lowers energy bills, and extends your dryer’s life. Grandma’s simple trick is proof that the easiest solutions are often the smartest.
