The Dinner That No One Came To

Lauren had spent the entire afternoon bustling around her kitchen, trying to recreate her late mother’s famous fried fish. Her brother had mentioned a few days earlier how much he missed it, and with the family visiting for the weekend, it felt like the perfect way to end their stay.

She carefully followed the old, yellowed recipe card, just as their mom had taught her. By the time she finished, the house was filled with the comforting smell of hot oil, lemon, and seasoning. It reminded her of summers as kids, crowded around the table, laughing and fighting over the crispiest pieces.

When the food was ready, she called out cheerfully, “Dinner’s ready!”
No response.

She tried again, louder this time. Her brother’s wife was scrolling through Facebook, her brother was glued to the football game, and the kids were too absorbed in their video games to look up.

Lauren sighed. She sat down at the long table by herself and ate in silence. Each bite tasted less like nostalgia and more like disappointment.

When she finished, she glanced at the untouched dishes. The fish wouldn’t reheat well. She didn’t want the house to smell like cold oil all night, so she wrapped it up and walked toward the trash bin, heart heavy.

Just then, her brother walked in from outside. “Hey, what are you doing?” he asked, confused.

Before she could answer, their mother’s weak but firm voice echoed from down the hall:
“Throwing away dinner? My recipe? Over my dead body.”

They all froze. Slowly, one by one, the family trickled to the table. The kids put down their controllers, her brother muted the game, and her sister-in-law slipped her phone away.

Lauren watched as they sat down, plates clattering, chatter finally filling the room. Her brother looked at her with a sheepish grin.

“Sorry, sis. Thanks for cooking. Really.”

And just like that, the warmth returned—not just from the food, but from the reminder that sometimes, family just needs a wake-up call to come together.
