Flight attendants do much more than serve drinks—they play a crucial role in passenger safety, especially during takeoff and landing. Cebu Pacific flight attendant Henny Lim explained the “bracing position” in a popular TikTok video, revealing why crew members sit with their hands on their thighs and feet flat on the floor during these critical moments.
The bracing position involves sitting up straight, fastening the seatbelt securely, resting hands on the thighs with thumbs tucked in, keeping arms loose, and placing feet flat on the ground. This posture helps reduce body movement and lowers the risk of injury during an emergency landing by preparing the body to withstand crash forces.
Regulatory authorities like the FAA highlight that the bracing position minimizes flailing limbs and secondary impacts by positioning the body, especially the head, against impact surfaces. Flight attendants also use this time for a “silent review,” mentally preparing for potential emergencies.
Thanks to social media, flight attendants such as Lim, Destanie, and Esther Sturrus have shared insights into the challenges of their job and emphasized the importance of following safety procedures. Understanding why crew members sit this way gives passengers greater appreciation for the dedication and care flight attendants provide to keep everyone safe.
