My DIL Took Me on Vacation With Them Just to Make Me Her Maid

Maria, a stay-at-home wife and devoted grandmother, spends her days cooking, cleaning, and caring for her grandkids. One day, her daughter-in-law commented that she looked terrible and needed self-care — a remark that hurt Maria deeply. Soon after, her DIL invited her on a long family vacation at her beach house, and Maria believed it was a gesture of kindness and appreciation.

But on the first day of vacation, her DIL asked, “What are we having for lunch?” and implied Maria would be doing all the cooking. Shocked but trying to keep the peace, Maria cooked the meal. By dinner, she put a weekly meal plan on the fridge, assigning everyone responsibilities to make things fair. Her DIL walked away without a word.

Maria’s son then confronted her, accusing her of putting pressure on his wife. Hurt and feeling used, Maria tried to explain she wasn’t a maid and deserved rest too. Instead of understanding, her son became angry and asked her to leave, leaving her stunned and heartbroken.

Maria fears damaging her relationship with her son but knows she was treated unfairly. She hopes to speak to him privately and make him understand she came on vacation to relax, not work. Every caregiver deserves a break — and Maria is learning that even family sometimes needs reminding.
