When using a water heater, just knowing how to activate this function will help the heater last longer

Water heaters are essential during cold months, but many people don’t realize that proper use and regular maintenance are key to keeping them safe, efficient, and long-lasting. Over time, minerals and dirt naturally settle at the bottom of the tank, reducing heating efficiency and potentially damaging internal components. Fortunately, most water heaters are designed with a sediment discharge valve — a small, often overlooked feature that makes cleaning much easier than expected. By first turning off the power and water supply, draining the hot water to avoid burns, and gently opening this valve, you can flush out built-up residue. During this process, it’s important to check the magnesium rod, which protects the tank from rust. If it’s heavily corroded, replacing it promptly can prevent leaks and costly damage. Experts recommend performing this simple cleaning routine about once every six months to extend the life of the heater and ensure cleaner, safer hot water.

Beyond cleaning, smart daily habits play a major role in safety and energy savings. Choosing a water heater with the right capacity for your household prevents unnecessary electricity use, while opting for reputable brands ensures better technology and built-in safety features. Avoid leaving the heater on around the clock — turning it on just 10–15 minutes before use saves energy and reduces wear. Lowering the water temperature to around 36°C not only improves safety but can significantly cut monthly electricity costs. Proper installation is equally important: placing the tank close to points of use minimizes heat loss, and ensuring good ventilation and grounding protects against electrical or gas hazards. Regular inspections, even simple checks with an electrical tester, help detect issues early. With mindful use and routine care, a water heater can remain both safe and reliable for many years.
