Man converted storage silo into a beautiful 2-bedroom home — see inside

A scenic drive along Highway 50 toward Elmdale leads travelers into the quiet beauty of West Chase County, Kansas, where open skies stretch endlessly above rolling soybean fields. Tucked into a peaceful creek valley stands the Owl’s Nest Silo House, a thoughtfully transformed grain silo that offers guests a one-of-a-kind countryside escape. The project was brought to life by Gerald Wiens, who first built a nearby log cabin in 2019 with plans to rent it occasionally for weekend getaways. Unexpectedly, demand soared, especially during the pandemic, with the cabin hosting guests for much of the year. Inspired by that success, Gerald turned his attention to an old silo on the property. Though its circular shape posed design challenges, careful planning and creativity transformed it into a four-level retreat rising 45 feet tall, blending rustic charm with modern comfort.

Inside, the silo opens into a cozy circular living room designed for relaxation. Plush leather chairs invite quiet conversation, while a stone-framed gas fireplace and mounted television create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. A cleverly placed half bathroom sits beneath a winding staircase, maximizing space without sacrificing comfort. Guests can climb 45 spiral steps to reach the fourth-floor master bedroom, where elevated views enhance the peaceful experience. Gerald describes the project as a true labor of love, requiring countless hours of dedication. Today, the nearby cabin is listed as a vacation rental in Chase County, and the silo retreat is set to join it—offering visitors a memorable stay beneath Kansas’ star-filled skies.
