Authorities released photos of a suspect after 31-year-old political activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University (UVU). The FBI Salt Lake City Field Office is urgently seeking information from the public and has offered a $100,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest.
On September 11, 2025, the FBI shared surveillance images showing a man wearing a dark cap, sunglasses, and a black shirt with an American flag design. The suspect was seen carrying a black backpack. Investigators also recovered a rifle and other physical evidence, including prints, near the area where the suspect reportedly fled.
Kirk was killed on September 10 during a live event attended by nearly 3,000 people. Moments before the incident, he engaged in a tense exchange with an audience member about U.S. mass shootings. Seconds later, a shot was fired, and the crowd scattered in panic.
Witnesses described the chaos that followed. One attendee recalled being just 15 feet away and helping others escape. Another initially thought the gunshot was part of a performance before realizing what had happened.
A UVU spokesperson confirmed that shots were fired from a building about 200 yards away. While one person was initially detained, they were later released. The FBI has since launched a wider search, noting that the shooter appears to have had firearms experience.
National leaders mourned Kirk’s death. President Donald Trump called it a “dark moment” in U.S. history and ordered flags flown at half-staff through September 14. Vice President JD Vance also offered condolences, calling Kirk a “legendary” figure who inspired young Americans.
The investigation is ongoing. Tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or through the FBI’s online portal.
