Two Familiar TV Faces Confused Fans for Years — The Explanation Is Surprisingly Simple

Viewers watching Smallville and the X-Men movies often experienced the same strange feeling: Jimmy Olsen and Iceman looked almost exactly alike. The resemblance was so precise that many fans assumed one busy actor had quietly moved between the DC and Marvel worlds. Years later, the confusion returned when Gil Timmins appeared on Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia. Some viewers of ABC’s The Rookie were convinced they recognized the actor who plays attorney Wesley Evers. The voices, expressions, and features seemed to match, yet the credits displayed different first names. For anyone who had missed one important detail, Hollywood appeared to be making the same mistake repeatedly.

The story began long before either performer became associated with superheroes or popular television dramas. Born in Richmond, British Columbia, in 1979, the two Canadian actors entered show business as children after a talent representative approached their mother. Because they looked so similar and often auditioned for the same commercials, casting directors sometimes struggled to choose between them. Shawn later recalled that certain decisions were settled with a coin toss in front of both boys, allowing chance to determine who received the role. That unusual childhood arrangement offered the clearest clue—but the truth behind those nearly identical faces still surprises new viewers.

The actors are identical twin brothers Shawn and Aaron Ashmore, and each built a substantial career under his own name. Shawn became widely recognized as Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, in the X-Men film series before appearing in The Following and The Rookie. Aaron portrayed Jimmy Olsen on Smallville and later appeared in Warehouse 13, Killjoys, Locke & Key, and Ginny & Georgia. Their shared interest in science fiction, fantasy, crime, and superhero projects made the mix-up even easier. Although fans may treat them as interchangeable, their separate identities matter on studio contracts and insurance policies, just as they would on mortgage, investment, or estate documents reviewed by an attorney or court. Adding another layer to the story, Shawn appeared in two earlier episodes of Smallville as Eric Summers before Aaron joined the series as Jimmy Olsen.

The confusion has continued with a newer generation of streaming viewers. Aaron’s performance as Gil on Ginny & Georgia led some fans to believe Shawn had stepped away from his sympathetic role on The Rookie to portray a very different character. Online discussions soon filled with surprised reactions from people only then discovering that there were two Ashmores. Once viewers know the truth, separating their credits becomes easier: Shawn is the brother associated with Iceman and Wesley, while Aaron is linked to Jimmy Olsen and Gil. Their careers occasionally overlap in genre and tone, but both have spent decades developing distinct bodies of work. The mystery was never clever makeup, recasting, or one actor maintaining an impossibly crowded schedule. Fans had simply been watching two talented brothers who happened to share nearly the same face.
