Frequent Cannabis Use May Affect Morning Stress Hormones — What a New Study Actually Found

For many cannabis users, the first puff is associated with calm, relief, and a chance to leave the day’s pressure behind. A new Oregon State University study, however, suggests the body may be telling a more complicated story the following morning. Researchers examined more than 80 adults to explore whether frequent cannabis use was connected to changes in cortisol, commonly called the “stress hormone.” Cortisol helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar, metabolism, and the body’s response to stressful situations. Scientists focused on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the major system that controls this response. Their findings revealed a measurable difference—but not necessarily the one researchers expected.

The team compared frequent cannabis users with people who did not use the substance regularly. Both groups experienced a similar cortisol awakening response, meaning the normal rise in cortisol during the first 30 minutes after waking was largely alike. Frequent users, however, began the day with higher cortisol levels already circulating in their bodies. Those higher waking levels were also associated with more cannabis-related consequences reported by participants. Because the research captured only one period in time, study leader Anita Cservenka stressed that it could not establish cause and effect—and that uncertainty may be the study’s most important revelation.

Cservenka and colleagues Julia Donner and Alexia Obrochta said longer studies are needed to determine what comes first. Chronic stress may encourage someone to use cannabis more frequently, while regular use could potentially alter the body’s stress-regulation system over time, creating a cycle that is difficult to separate. The research does not prove that cannabis permanently damages the brain, nor does it establish that every frequent user will develop anxiety, depression, or heart problems. That distinction matters when medical decisions overlap with an insurance claim, an employer’s policy, an attorney’s advice, or evidence presented in court. It may also matter to families protecting a mortgage, retirement investment, or estate while managing health concerns. The study instead offers an early biological clue: waking cortisol could eventually become a marker researchers use to better understand problematic cannabis use. The authors also noted that earlier research reported a weaker morning cortisol rise among chronic users, a result this study did not reproduce.

The findings challenge the simple idea that feeling relaxed immediately after using cannabis means the body’s broader stress system is functioning normally. They also do not erase research into possible medical uses of cannabinoids or prove that occasional and frequent use carry identical effects. Frequency, quantity, product strength, and method of consumption were not examined closely enough to show which patterns might be most influential. Researchers now want longitudinal studies that follow the same people before and after regular cannabis use begins, allowing them to separate preexisting stress differences from later changes. For adults who use cannabis to cope with daily pressure, the study offers a reason to pay closer attention to sleep, mood, dependence, and overall well-being without jumping to alarming conclusions. The clearest message is not that cannabis inevitably causes high stress, but that short-term relief and long-term stress regulation may not always tell the same story.
