Amazon Cargo Jet Overruns Miami Runway — Investigators Search for the Missing Answer

Homes near Miami International Airport suddenly shook as dark smoke appeared beyond the airfield on Sunday afternoon. At approximately 2 p.m. on September 6, Amazon Air Flight 7598 overran a runway while landing and struck several vehicles outside the airport’s operational boundary. The Boeing 767-300 cargo plane had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was operated by 21 Air on Amazon’s behalf. Five people lost their lives, while five others were hospitalized, including three in critical condition. Nearby resident Jose Sanchez said the impact felt like an explosion or a large truck collision. Within minutes, emergency vehicles were pouring toward a scene that fire officials would describe as extraordinarily complex.

More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and approximately 200 personnel responded. Crews confronted heavy smoke, an engine-compartment fire, damaged vehicles, trapped occupants, and leaking aircraft fuel. Specialized airport firefighters used foam while technical rescue teams worked to reach those who could not escape without assistance. The airport temporarily closed its runways and taxiways, placing all arriving and departing flights under a ground stop. Although air traffic later resumed with delays, one urgent question remained unanswered: Why had the aircraft been unable to stop?

Flight-tracking information indicated that the 32-year-old cargo jet was still traveling at approximately 112 knots—or 129 mph—when it passed the usable end of the runway. Air-traffic-control recordings reviewed by news organizations reportedly contained no emergency declaration from the pilots before landing, but neither detail establishes the cause. The National Transportation Safety Board sent an investigative team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, while the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that it would also examine the incident. Investigators are expected to review the aircraft’s systems, brakes, tires, maintenance records, crew decisions, runway conditions, weather, and flight data. The tragedy could also lead affected families to consult an attorney regarding insurance, liability, estate matters, and possible court proceedings. For nearby businesses and homeowners, questions involving property damage, mortgage obligations, and financial investment may follow, but responsibility cannot be determined before investigators complete their work.

Amazon said it was working with local authorities and that caring for everyone affected remained its immediate priority. Operator 21 Air expressed condolences to the families, while Boeing said it would support the government investigation. Officials had not publicly identified those who lost their lives or the people receiving hospital care when the first reports were released. Despite online theories about speed, weather, or the point where the aircraft touched down, federal investigators had not announced an official cause. The aircraft’s age alone also does not demonstrate that it was unsafe, since commercial planes operate under required inspection and maintenance programs. For now, the most responsible conclusion is also the least dramatic: the flight’s final seconds are still being reconstructed, and the answer must come from evidence rather than speculation.
