Richard Drew raised his camera toward the World Trade Center and kept pressing the shutter, unaware that one frame would become among the most debated photographs of September 11, 2001. The veteran Associated Press photographer had started that morning covering a maternity fashion show in Midtown Manhattan. At 8:46 a.m., a newsroom editor calmly called to report that a plane had struck the North Tower. Drew immediately entered the subway and emerged near the southern end of Manhattan, where smoke filled the skyline and confusion spread through the streets. He began photographing what unfolded before him, relying on decades of professional instinct. Only later would he understand what his camera had recorded.

Drew photographed several people seen leaving the towers from above, allowing his motor-driven camera to capture successive frames rather than carefully composing each one. In a sequence of eight or nine images, one unidentified man appeared almost perfectly vertical against the building’s straight lines. The man’s identity has never been officially confirmed, although journalists have examined evidence involving Jonathan Eric Briley and Norberto Hernandez, whose names appear close together at the September 11 Memorial. This was not a mystery that an attorney, insurance investigator, mortgage record, investment account, estate document, or court filing could easily settle. Singer Elton John later purchased a print for his private collection, describing the photograph as visually remarkable despite its heartbreaking subject. Drew, however, continued to treat it as journalism—a fraction of a second preserved not for spectacle, but as evidence of what people faced that morning.

The assignment also followed Drew home in deeply personal ways. While he was still photographing the aftermath weeks later, his daughter called simply to say she loved him, recognizing that he could easily have been among those who never returned. She continued that tradition every September 11, reaching him wherever his work had taken him. Drew’s photographs also helped one man identify his missing fiancée by recognizing the clothing she had worn that day, providing a painful measure of certainty when few answers were available. More than two decades later, “Falling Man” remains difficult to view and equally difficult to dismiss. Its power comes not from knowing the man’s name, but from remembering that every figure in the towers belonged to a family, carried a history, and deserved to be seen as a person rather than a symbol.
