Jevon Castrillo’s hands trembled as he unfolded a letter written by his mother nearly 24 years earlier. The familiar handwriting belonged to Cee Cee Ross Lyles, a United Airlines flight attendant who lost her life aboard Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Jevon was only a child when he lost her, but he is now an adult with a young baby of his own. The letter had been written in March 2001, just months before the attacks, and contained a simple message about his progress in kindergarten. WPTV reporter Jon Shainman personally delivered the carefully preserved page to Jevon in Fort Pierce, Florida. As cameras recorded the moment, Jevon began reading words he never knew his mother had written.

The note had survived because Jevon’s former kindergarten teacher, Tammy Thurman, carried it through four separate moves. Cee Cee had sent it after Jevon brought home a library book and proudly read every page by himself. Tammy eventually contacted the television station, allowing Shainman to arrange a video call that reunited teacher and student. During their conversation, she showed Jevon an old class photograph and explained why she could never throw the letter away. Then Jevon reached the final lines and discovered exactly what his mother had wanted his teacher to know.

Cee Cee wrote that the family was extremely proud of Jevon and would continue helping him with his reading at home. She also thanked Tammy for her dedication and courage as an educator. The message did not discuss an estate, insurance policy, mortgage, investment, attorney, or court matter; its value came from something no financial document could provide—a mother’s personal pride in her child. Jevon’s voice wavered as he read it aloud, describing the message as touching and unmistakably like something his mother would have said. Tammy told him that, as a mother herself, she understood why he needed to see those words. The letter also offered Jevon a connection to Cee Cee beyond the tragedy associated with Flight 93. Before becoming a flight attendant in January 2001, she had served her Fort Pierce community as a police officer and detective. Her new career with United Airlines represented a long-held dream of traveling and seeing more of the world.

Cee Cee’s courage is honored in Fort Pierce with a statue and an engraved memorial, while friends continue remembering the warm, determined woman behind the uniform. One longtime friend has also celebrated her as a cherished “softball sister,” recalling the joyful summers they shared on the field. For Jevon, however, the rediscovered letter preserved something even more intimate: an ordinary evening when a mother listened to her little boy read and felt proud enough to tell his teacher. Now raising a child himself, he plans to keep the note and carry its message into the next generation. After traveling through four moves and nearly a quarter-century, that single sheet of paper finally reached the person for whom it mattered most.
