The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that about 200 U.S. Marines have been deployed to Florida to provide logistical and administrative support to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officials stressed the Marines will not take part in law enforcement or immigration enforcement, focusing instead on tasks like communications, transportation planning, and supply coordination.
The temporary deployment, which also includes parts of Texas and Louisiana, aims to ease strain on overcrowded ICE facilities. While some lawmakers and civil rights groups raised concerns about military involvement, the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security said the mission is legal, limited in scope, and closely monitored.
