We Adopted a 7-Year-Old From an Orphanage—The Second She Saw My Husband, She Screamed, ‘Oh No… Not Him Again!’

Nancy had long dreamed of becoming a mother, but after learning she could never have children, she and her husband Stephen decided to adopt. While Stephen was away on a medical mission, Nancy met seven-year-old Giselle at an orphanage and instantly felt a connection. Soon, Giselle moved into their home, filling the once-quiet house with laughter and warmth. But when Stephen returned and met the girl for the first time, everything fell apart. Giselle panicked at the sight of him, screaming in fear and begging Nancy to keep him away. Later, Stephen realized he had encountered Giselle a year earlier when he tried to save her mother after a fatal car accident. The frightened child had witnessed the emergency procedure and mistakenly believed Stephen was hurting her mother, leaving her traumatized and terrified of him.

Determined to help Giselle heal, Nancy and Stephen discovered the girl’s father had abandoned her after blaming her for her mother’s death and leaving her at an orphanage. When confronted, he admitted he did not want the responsibility of raising her. Heartbroken but resolute, Nancy and Stephen brought Giselle home, reassuring her that she was loved and wanted. Slowly, they helped her understand that Stephen had tried to save her mother, not harm her. With patience and compassion, fear turned into trust, and Giselle finally felt safe. One evening, while hanging a family photo on the wall, she quietly declared that she felt at home. In that moment, Nancy realized that family is not built by blood alone, but by the people who choose to stay, love, and protect one another when life becomes hardest.
