Apple issues warning to all 1.8bn iPhone users over ‘extremely sophisticated’ spyware attack

Apple has released an urgent iOS security update and is encouraging iPhone users worldwide to install it as soon as possible. The new update addresses 39 security vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to access private data, crash applications, or even gain control of a device through malicious files, websites, or physical access. Of particular concern is a serious flaw in the system that manages how apps run on iPhones. Security experts compare this system to a gatekeeper, ensuring apps stay separate from sensitive data. The vulnerability allowed attackers to bypass protections and run harmful code before safeguards could intervene. Apple confirmed the flaw may already have been used in highly targeted attacks, making the update especially important.

The security patch also strengthens defenses across Apple’s ecosystem, including iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Safari, to prevent unauthorized access and spyware installation. Experts warn that such attacks can remain hidden for long periods, affecting not only public figures and organizations but everyday users as well. Installing updates promptly remains the simplest way to protect personal information. Users can update their devices through the Settings menu and are advised to enable automatic updates to stay protected. Warning signs of compromise include unusual battery drain, overheating, or unfamiliar apps appearing. For those at higher risk, Apple’s Lockdown Mode offers additional protection, though with limited device functionality.
