My son married Tina when they were both young, and at first their life together seemed full of promise. When their baby boy arrived, I believed their family would only grow stronger. But over time, Tina quietly revealed that my son had been unfaithful, and not just once. She forgave him repeatedly, hoping he would change for their child’s sake. Instead, months later, my son casually informed us he was divorcing her because he had found someone he thought was “better.” Tina was left alone with a one-year-old, struggling to support herself and her child while my son quickly moved on and even invited us to his new wedding.
On the day of that wedding, my husband and I made a different choice. Instead of attending, we went to Tina’s small rented room, where she was exhausted and trying to calm her crying baby after a long day of work. We helped with chores, brought food, and gave her a chance to rest. When my son later called, angry that we had missed his ceremony, I told him honestly that we chose to support the woman he had hurt and the child who still needed stability. He hasn’t spoken to us since, but seeing Tina continue to fight for her son reminds me that sometimes standing by what feels right matters more than keeping peace.
