My Stepdaughter Had Not Spoken to Me for Five Years Until a Heavy Package Arrived at My Door

For five years, three months, and twelve days, I had been living with a silence so complete it had taken on physical properties, something I moved around in rather than simply experienced. I kept an exact count because I had been keeping it since the beginning, crossing off each square on the calendar that hung beside the refrigerator in the kitchen, a small daily act of accounting that I had never been able to make myself stop. It was not entirely rational. I understood that. But the crossing off had become part of the morning, as fixed as the coffee and the particular quality of light that came through the east window at six-fifteen, and abandoning it would have required a deliberate decision I had not been ready to make. The calendar had been crooked since the day Grace left. She had slammed the front door hard enough on her way out that the force traveled through the walls and knocked the calendar sideways on its nail, sending three of the magnetic clips skittering across the linoleum floor. I had picked up the magnets. I had not straightened the calendar.

For five years, three months, and twelve days, I had stood in that kitchen and looked at the same slightly tilted rectangle of paper and told myself I would fix it later, that it was such a small thing, that it hardly mattered. But the truth was simpler and heavier than that: straightening it would mean admitting the door had been slammed and the person who slammed it was not coming back. It would mean making the permanent adjustment. And I was not, in some part of myself that I could not seem to reach with reason, prepared to do that.So the calendar stayed crooked.I had met Grace when she was four years old, on a Sunday afternoon in the backyard of Jean’s duplex in Maplewood, where Jean had been living with her daughter since the end of her previous marriage. Grace had been in the backyard throwing a tennis ball against the fence with the focused repetition of a child who had decided on a project and was going to complete it whether anyone joined her or not. She was missing her two front teeth and wearing a purple shirt with a cartoon dinosaur on it, and she glanced at me when I came through the gate with the specific assessment of a child who has learned to evaluate adults quickly, deciding without much visible deliberation that I was probably temporary and therefore not worth extensive consideration.
